“Parentification” is when a child
Is forced to become a parent
For themselves, their siblings, or their parents.
It’s the shadow at the edge of the light.
I can see it out of the corner of my eye,
I’ve known this shadow since I toddled
This poem isn’t about you.
You’ll scan the lines, thrown off by the subtlety and ask me
Why this poem isn’t about you.
I’ll shrug my shoulders, as a tend to,
And look off into the distance.
