I think the dissonance comes not in the fact that people are trying to cover their arses (which, as you point out, is the way people are) but in the fact that journalists are supposed to be truth-tellers—especially in an organization as theoretically traditional and straight-down-the-line as the AP. There’s a version of accountability, transparency and honesty that journalists expect from other institutions that they often veer directly away from themselves. It’s not new, but moments like these bring it into focus.
