If you’re planning on taking a trip that lasts for a few weeks or several months, it can be challenging to know what to take with you. For college students, this dilemma often occurs when you’re planning on studying abroad. For young professionals, sometimes they move to a far away destination for a new job or to simply try living there. It’s far too costly and time-consuming to take everything you own with you, so it’s important to know how to pack efficiently. Here are tips for packing for that long trip.

Plan for the weather

When you’re traveling somewhere for an extended period of time, it’s important to plan ahead of the weather you may encounter. Are you going to be somewhere long enough to experience seasons? What if it rains or snows? Taking a heavier coat or a swimsuit is always a good idea; you never know when you might need those articles of clothing. Do research to see what types of clothes the people wear there.

Get reliable luggage

If you’re going to be traveling for a significant amount of time, make sure you have reliable luggage that won’t break in the middle of your trip. Even if it’s pricier, it’ll be worth the investment. Watch for when department stores have sales and then take advantage of those luggage prices.

Take versatile clothes

You might be studying abroad and think you can make do with casual clothes for the entire time you’re gone, but make sure you pack versatile clothes. Have items you can layer or wear during various weather. It’s also helpful to pack more professional looking clothes in case you would have some kind of interview or formal event to attend.

Important electronics

You’ll obviously take your cell phone with on your trip, but remember to take a charger and adapter as well, especially if you’re traveling to another country. Consider having a variety of adapters; you may need to use more than one at once. Portable chargers are incredibly useful, especially if you’re somewhere that doesn’t have outlets. If you plan to take your laptop or tablet, double check that you have all the accessories you need for those.

Small toiletries

When you travel, make sure you have enough toiletries in your bag that can last for a couple of days. You do not need to pack full-size products; most destinations have some kind of grocery stores you can visit and purchase necessities. Instead of taking up space in your luggage, wait to get most of your toiletries once you arrive.

Security measures

No matter where you’re going, there’s some risk involved. Take time to purchase a lock for your suitcase and a secure wallet or pouch to keep important documents in. Be aware of your surroundings and understand the possible risks of wherever you’re going.
