PyLadies Lightning Talks Nov 2015

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and dark to attend our final meetup of 2015! Thanks especially to the folks to presented. We had a variety of presentation subjects and formats.

Angela Bortolussi kicked off the evening by discussing her perspective on recruiting women in the software industry, for positions in Vancouver as well as the Bay Area and Los Angeles.

small yellow duck followed up with an introduction to sklearn and an introductory overview of machine learning in general. She also introduced Kaggle, referring interested folks to the Kaggle titanic walkthrough at dataquest.io.

Her complete slides: machine learning with python: sklearn.

PyLadies Vancouver co-organizer Caroline Liu just returned to Vancouver from three months at the Recurse Center!

Caroline gave us an overview of the four Recurse Center social rules, and how they created a refreshingly welcoming and supportive environment. She then gave us a live demo of setting up a blog server using Django, based on the Django Girls tutorial.

Holly completed the eveningby giving us an overview of the many implementations of Python available, and why we would want to use them.

She covered the five major contenders (as well as briefly covering some of the less well known implementations):

  • CPython
  • Pypy
  • Cython
  • Jython
  • IronPython

Her complete slides: Python Implementations - Snakes all the way down.

And that was our last meeting of 2015! See you in 2016 :D
