author’s garden picture — foxglove

This is a foxglove bloom, one of my favorite flowers. I love it partly because it is an assertive self-seeder. It pops up wherever and whenever it wants. It might start in the back yard, then go to the side yard and then plop itself down out front, all at the same time. You don’t have to plant it — I don’t remember if I planted the original one. It might have been included in a wildflower packet that I spread over the rose boundary between my yard and the neighbors — where I also had the “offending” butterfly bush, which is so fragrant:). You might say the foxglove is the radical in the world of the carefully manicured lawns and hedges.

The foxglove isn’t particularly fragrant, its appeal is more visual. For one thing it is a brilliant light purple outside which brightens up the yard. And then the white and purple pattern inside looks like a painting. It was prolific and persistent, and I would see it everywhere around the yard. One of the reasons I miss our old house — the patio planters are just not the same.

However, I have another plant I love, which does well in planters. Starry petunias (see above). You do have to plant them…
