The Team with No Names
Thank Heavens the Eagles season is over (technically, anyway). This storied franchise that still lacks a Super Bowl trophy is a mess, like a house under renovation without a blueprint. 2015 was disastrous nightmare of a season that brought back memories of Rich Kotite and Ty Detmer, only worse. Worse because we were tantalized and teased that Chip Kelly would restore order and victory to a team that had lost its way.
During his first season, Kelly fed off the infrastructure that Andy Reid had built and got to the playoffs, proving he could coach with the right weapons. And yet, the house that Andy built was not what Kelly wanted.
Understandable.
By season two, Kelly began tearing down the walls like a crazed homeowner on a mission to renovate, but lacking the skill to do it. The outright release of DeSean Jackson, who became a poster boy for Kelly’s so-called “culture beats scheme” philosophy, was a bone-headed move. To get nothing back for a player of his caliber was just a mind-boggling decision.
The Eagles missed the playoffs that season, and Jeffrey Lurie rewarded Kelly with the power of GM. We all know what happened next. Kelly not only dismantled Andy’s house, he destroyed the foundation and replaced it with second-hand wood….
The team with no names. No explosiveness. No stars. A team that performed without consistency, without discipline and often without heart.
And so it probably should come as no surprise that things came full circle last night as Jackson had the last laugh with the worst to first Redskins, beating Kelly and his no star powered Eagles to earn a spot in the playoffs.
Stars make the playoffs, Chip. The rest of us get to watch.
When he fired Andy Reid, Jeffrey Lurie said, “I think we lost some of the method we have all shared that created the success, which was discipline, strategic thinking, don’t do necessarily what was popular but what was right.” And yet, Lurie brought in a coach who did not restore discipline or strategic thinking. He also hired someone who not only made unpopular decisions, but also made idiotic decisions.
Gone is the house that Andy built and we are left with Chip’s dumpster pile.
Please Mr. Lurie, clean up this mess.
