Evangelicals and Trump

The word is that Evangelical Christians remain Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters. This has always stumped me because I thought that I learned all that I needed to know about Christianity when I attended Sunday school as a kid. Simply, what I learned was The Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. How does this apply to Trump and politics, you might ask?
Well, income mobility is far lower than the proponents of the American Dream would have us believe. This means that it’s increasingly more difficult for any individual to change the social status to which they are born. Add on top of this the fact that Robert Frank, in his book Success and Luck, demonstrates that luck contributes more than the commonly accepted amount of influence on any individual’s success. This might make a Christian (see paragraph 1 for what it means to be a Christian) say something like: there, but for the grace of God, go I. Christianity suggests a strong bias towards compassion.
The Trump-supported national health care plan passed by the House of Representatives is completely anti-Christian. It gives enormous tax cuts to the super-rich, while at the same time, it cuts benefits and raises health premiums for many others. What does Jesus have to say about this? See Matthew 19:24:”Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.”
Evangelicals are therefore not Christians. I have just proven that. What exactly is the meaning of Evangelical? Evangelical comes from the Greek word meaning “good news”. The “good news” is that Christ gave his life so that we all might follow his lead to salvation. Implicit in this journey to salvation is following the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures.
There isn’t much “good news” in the continued support of Evangelical Christians for Donald Trump. There is only hypocrisy. It’s time for this group to look in the mirror and ask: am I really a Christian or just a cheap imitation of one? And if they would look a bit longer they might come to realize that Donald Trump is, in fact, The Antichrist.
