“I’m going to go out on a limb: There is no modern example that shows violence as an effective tool for social change movements.”

At the risk of encouraging this author’s foolish bravado, a case can be made that the Irish Revolution began as impossible acts of resistance against an entrenched and powerful state. In time, the carnage forced people to take sides (“…a terrible beauty was born…”), thereby tipping the political feasibility of a nascent republic. Living to see it is the only good reason to force social change.
