You are right about the salaries of some senior developers but I think in many cases, it is because they have a unique knowledge of a particular system as the architect of the system or SME that makes companies pay those salaries to retain that knowledge.

To your second point, why is it that so few are qualified? Where I live, I don’t see companies doing that. I see them building out functions of their bread and butter applications on mobile but not developing entire new applications. The problem is how do you get qualified when you can’t get a position doing it so you could become qualified? It’s all subjective anyway. Companies are going to want to train you to do things their way so why not invest in training that will help you to do what they need you to do?
