The Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex, commonly known as the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, is a nature park operated by the city of Boca Raton, Florida in partnership with the Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards and the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District and situated in 1801 N. Ocean Blvd. in Boca Raton. Gumbo Limbo is located on twenty acres of barrier islands, which are those areas that are between the Intracoastal Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. It is on land which is part of the beachfront-to-intracoastal Red Reef Park, though Gumbo Limbo does not have land directly on the beach. The name is derived from the Bursera simaruba tree species found in the park. The center houses an indoor museum that has exhibits, small aquariums, and a gift shop and more outdoor facilities including several large aquariums that feature ecosystems for fish, turtles and other sea life, a boardwalk trail that runs through the nearby woods as well as a garden specifically designed for the purpose of watching butterflies. Events hosted by the center include the observation of sea turtles in their nesting season. The operation of the center and its activities are greatly helped by volunteers from the local community.
