I’m skeptical, mainly because I lived through the Nader campaign. Ralph Nader was pitched much like Bernie Sanders — he was the anti-establishment candidate who was supposed to break through and give us a populist, progressive presidency that would sweep away the old order of things.
I bought into it. I voted for Nader. And as a result we got George W. Bush.
I really hope that Sanders doesn’t similarly lead us down a primrose path that will end with a Cruz presidency. The stakes are higher than ever, because they next president will get to pick at least one Supreme Court justice, possibly as many as three. While Hillary Clinton may not be my first choice on some issues, I *do* trust her not to pick a conservative judge. If Trump or Cruz are elected, they definitely will, and we’ll have no hope of any meaningful change for the next 30 years. Gay marriage, LGBT rights, abortion rights — the Republicans have promised to nominate judges that will roll back all of these. We can’t risk it. This is a year to play it safe.
