Better start talking about naming the kids now; the next hurdle. I kept my surname, but remember the day we had our second son and I suggested maybe giving him my last name and using my husband’s last name as the middle name (a switch from my first son, who got my last name as middle name, and my husband’s last name as his last name). There are no other grandchildren in my family, and it only seemed fair. But treated like a child, I was told “No, that is where I draw the line.” Even though I was the bread winner (only one employed, in fact), it was loud and clear what the rules were. I hope women these days are more enlightened and assertive and that names — along with everything else — can prevail equally.
