Few Americans are aware of the flag code. I would never burn the flag, but I do believe it is political speech. Trying to stop it is not worth a constitutional amendment.
Much worse, to my way of thinking, are the “pretend patriots” with the tattered, filthy flag flapping from their vehicle or storefront, or the ones who place flags along highway overpasses and then leave them to shred. And let’s not talk about the underwear. . . It has to be worth the considerable effort it would take to educate this country about the flag code and basic civics. And I say this as someone who was not taught civics in school in the 50s & 60s, but I have seen my parents’ civics books they passed on what they learned.
