The DVSA has announced that new MOT equipment will need to be able to connect to the MOT testing service, starting with new roller brake testers.

From 1 October 2019, anyone buying a new roller brake tester will need to ensure it is a model that can connect to the MOT testing service.

This includes buying a replacement or opening a new garage. You are not required to buy new equipment for 1 October; you can just wait until your old equipment is ready to be replaced with a new one.

The DVSA say they have made this change to modernise testings in garages, increase efficiency and reduce the risk of error and possibly fraud, and they are also working with manufacturers to develop other types of connectable equipment.

Below are a few types of equipment which will eventually be connected:

  • Diesel smoke meters
  • Exhaust gas analysers
  • Decelerometers
  • Headlamp aligners

When approved, these must also be replaced with connected devices when replacements are needed.

Chris Price, DVSA Head of MOT Policy said: “We’re bringing in connected equipment to modernise testing in MOT garages and reduce the potential for mistakes.

“It will make testing quicker, more accurate and give motorists greater confidence in the quality of testing.

“Garages already using this equipment have seen benefits to their business.”

Whilst technology is advancing, MOT Centres can also benefit from a free garage management portal www.bookmot.com to take online bookings, and manage their workshop.
