I’m a first-generation Filipino-American and I scare Donald Trump.
In response to Donald Trump’s latest rally, where he pointed out that even legal immigrants are suspect when it comes to national security.
Hey, Mr. Trump. We’ve never met, but I’ve got a question. Should I even be in this country?
Before we go there, let’s try a different tack. Do you think this sounds like you?
“I do not want to miss pointing out what I’ve said before, that if Muslims were to plunge the world into war, the role of Muslims would be finished in America. They may laugh about it today, as they laughed before about my predictions. The coming months and years will prove that I predicted right in this case too. But we can see already how our fellow Americans which are today still hostile to us will one day recognize the greater inner enemy, and that they too will then enter with us into a great common front. The front of Americans against radical Islam/foreign territories’ exploitation and destruction of nations.
…That this ideal, that our whole strength should be preserved in the coming year — this should be our wish today. That we will work for this community — let that be our vow. That we conquer in devotion to this community-that is our faith, one in which we are confident, and that the God should not abandon us in this struggle of the coming year — let that be our prayer. Make America Great Again!”
That’s because that’s a good ol’ Hitler speech from January 30, 1941. I just replaced “Jewry” with Muslims, “German” with American, some old vernacular (e.g.,“prophesies” with “predictions”) and added your tag line instead of “Germany! Hail victory!” I know, I know, it’s such a cliché to compare you to that guy. Or maybe you’d love it?
He thought he was going to win the war against the Other too.
For a while, I thought you were only talking about illegal immigration and refugees (not that I agree with you on that either). But now you’d like to re-examine my family and me too? What fun! I’m a first-generation Filipino-American, daughter of immigrants, FYI. I don’t usually have to designate my ethnic or racial origins to people, but I suppose you’ll want to know, so you can make sure to vet my parents and all my relatives.
Since it suddenly applies to me, I read your immigration reform platform. No birthright citizenship? My parents were naturalized after I was born, but perhaps you’d like me to take the same test? How about you take it with me?
Or maybe let’s forget about legal immigration altogether. How can you EVER know sure I’m not one of thousands filling up this Trojan horse of yours? You can’t be 100% sure. Oh, how to deal with a bunch of people you don’t trust, don’t want, and feel superior to…
I am the Other that you mention in your speeches. I guess I always have been, but your latest rant has cemented me into the minds of your supporters. Thanks for calling out the Philippines by name. You call out an entire people, Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, by name. You call out my family. You call me out, by name, and ask, “Should you even be here?”
…
I feel safer already.
