How Fashion Changes During The Soccer World Cup

The World Cup is upon us, one of the greatest sporting event of our generation. The effect that the World cup has on our world is apparent from the fact that not only does it pervade our lives in that we spend hours and hours glued to the television watching the games, but it has also taken over our wardrobes. I was not surprised to see that in Toronto, one of the best-dressed metropolitan cities in the world, people had taken to wearing their favourite team’s jersey everywhere they went.

Jerseys Are Fashionable Now

Women who are so fashionable normally and are dressed up to the nines everyday with dresses and heels, have taken to the world cup like fish to water. Maybe this is one way they can get the attention of all the men out there who are absolutely head-over-heels in passion with the game and see nothing else at all during the time the world cup runs. Or the awesomeness of soccer has finally pervaded the senses of everyone out there. I have seen more women wearing jerseys in this World cup than ever before.

Wearing Flags As Capes

What I was surprised to see was that in addition to wearing jerseys which is quite common place, people have also taken to wearing the flags of their favourite teams as a cape. I noticed this first in the transit buses all over Toronto. I take the transit to work, and I would see people standing at subway stops looking like superheroes with the flag capes flying behind them in the wind. I expected them to start yelling at anyone who cuts line or start flying to rescue a kitten stuck on a tree.

Cars Are Covered In Flags

Of course, the fashion madness doesn’t end there. In addition to the capes, we also have cars completely draped in the flags of the favourite countries or teams being supported. There are certain cars that have their hood covered with a huge flag, and little flags covering the rearview mirrors with the back window draped in another huge flag. It looks absolutely amazing and shows everyone exactly which team this person is supporting.

Google Homepage Changes Everyday

All of the above shows exactly how deep our love for soccer and the World Cup teams is. Google homepage is different everyday showing yet another way that soccer and the world cup has taken over everything we do, see and are. I know friends of mine who have put in their names to the ballet to get World cup game tickets in Brazil and were waiting anxiously for months to see if they were the lucky ones to receive tickets.

Every Tim Horton’s coffee shop (a ubiquitous coffee shop in Canada) is filled with fans draped with their flags, sitting on the chairs turned towards the televisions unable to deal with anything else besides soccer and what the score is. I made the mistake of asking one of these individuals who was playing and they looked at me as if I was someone worse than the dirt on the ground.

Remembering last time when Italy won a game and I was in Little Italy, there were people all over streetcars and buses, the streets were filled with people celebrating, the crowds draped with the flags, and jerseys. I cannot wait for the world cup to get closer to the semi-finals and finals. The streets will be alive not with the sound of music, but honking, and celebrations as favourite teams win. The closer we get to the finals, the frenzy of world cup will pervade not only our living rooms, and fashion, but will take us over mind, body and soul.
