Here’s a question: how many of the stars observable from Earth still exist? Since the light from many of them has traveled hundreds, thousands, even millions of light years to get here, is it not possible that many of the stars we see in fact burned out or exploded centuries or millenia ago and the light (or lack thereof) simply hasn’t reached us yet? Maybe our night sky is more empty than we realize, or maybe it features new stars we haven’t observed yet and won’t until their light arrives. How crazy would it be to look up and see a new star in the sky, or to watch one blink out?
