Once upon a time there were people known as blacksmiths, people who worked with iron and made a living on a job few could do. They were needed at the time. There were also carriage makers, TV repairmen, milkmen and even women who hand sew clothing. And what do all of these jobs have in common? As time passed, technology advanced and society changed most of these jobs were lost entirely or almost entirely yet our society did not collapse in oblivion. Instead new jobs were created to replace the old ones that were lost because they were no longer necessary.
It’s something that has happened many times before, is happening right now and will continue to happen in the future as long as progress is made, technology advances and people seek more for less. A prime example if the changes recently done in California where bail costs have been mostly eliminated in order to create a more equal justice system for the rich and poor. But for someone to benefit someone else has to pay the price and in this case it’s the bail bonds business. Because of this bail bondsmen will join the ranks of the tv repair guy, the milkman and the blacksmith who are now more like hobbyist work than real jobs.
In other words in order for progress to be made sacrifices have to be made but the goal is that the end results will more than make up for the sacrifices done for the sake of progress.
We cannot sustain this country by stalling progress for the sake of maintaining the status quo for fear that someone in a good position will potentially be forced to fail while those who are already failing are being forced to remain a failure. Sacrifices are necessary for our society to make progress and until this is accepted we will continue to see these arguments where we cannot take drastic measure to fix a problem because of the potential loss of jobs. In other words we should accept that some people have to suffer on purpose without any hope of ending the suffering so that others can improve their lives rather than cause some extra suffering in order to change things so that everyone can then benefit and thus no one has to suffer.
