It's funny how you can come across ideas to write about. For example, I was answering a question on Quora about the difference between dire and serious.

While researching both definitions, I came across "Dire Wolves." Hmmm, I thought to myself. I'll have to check into that. I had never heard of a dire wolf. I uncovered this, and I am not speaking of the dire wolves in "Game of Thrones."

What is a dire wolf?

The scientific name is Canis (Aenocyon) dirus. They are now extinct, but they were real. They were known to roam against Asia, Central America, North America, and South America.

The temporal range of the dire wolf was during the Late Pleistocene — early Holocene (125,000–9,500 years ago) age, according to Wikipedia.

Canis dirus' characteristics

What do scientists believe the Canis dirus' characteristics were?

Referring to Wikipedia again, the well-known resource source depicts the dire wolf like this.

The dire wolf was about the same size as the largest modern gray wolves (Canis lupus): the Yukon wolf and the northwestern wolf. A. d. guildayi
