Overview of Wondrous and Intriguing Maliau Basin

A saucer shaped basin, as if something not from this world, unexplored until recently. Even to this day, hardly 10 % of her are really known as she is protected from all side by steep gorges and cliffs. She is full of exotic plants and animals and has dozens of magnificent waterfalls. Cared and protected by The Sabah Foundation and supported by The Sabah Forestry and Wildlife departments, this 588.4 sq. km treasure attracts botanist, scientist, naturalist and the ordinary visitor from all over the world.

Itinerary

Day One Kota Kinabalu — Maliau Basin

An early morning pick up from your city hotel and we drive through scenic mountain views across the Crocker Range. After some 2 hours of driving you should arrive at the interior town of Keningau. Here, we will stop for some refreshments and collect your packed lunch. Continue the journey along sealed and gravel road and expected to arrive at around 1300Hrs at the Maliau base camp. After checking in at the Maliau Basin Studies Centre, explore the “Sky Bridge” and walk the short nature trail for an insight of what to expect the next day. Dinner and overnight at MBSC.

Day Two Maliau Basin

At approximately 0700Hrs, done with breakfast, transfer to Agathis Camp where a briefing will be conducted before you begin your trekking adventure to Nephenthes Camp, also known as Camel Trophy Camp and is about 7 km away. The trek will take approximately 5 to 6 hours over the rim of the basin. The first two hours will be an will be challenging uphill trek. Packed lunch will be served along the way. Depending on your fitness, you should be arriving at the camp at around 1400Hrs. If you are still game, trek a further 2.5 km to the Takop Akop waterfalls. Dinner and overnight at Nephenthes Camp.

Day Three Maliau Basin

Enjoy your breakfast, later proceed to the majestic 33 meters high Observation Tower which is a good viewing point if you are into birding. Back to the camp to pack your belongings and reconvene your trek to Maliau Waterfalls, a spectacular 7-tier falls. You will have lunch at the junction between Maliau Falls and Ginseng Camp. Arrive at the Maliau Falls at about 1500Hrs and enjoy the spectacular and extraordinary sight of the falls. Back trek to Ginseng Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day Four Maliau Basin

Breakfast will be served before 0700Hrs before recommencing your 9 km trek back to Agathis Camp. Boxed lunch will be served along the way. From Agathis Camp, transfer by 4WD to The Maliau Basin Studies Centre. Weary but proud and triumphant, a deserved rest awaits. In the evening, an option to go for a night walk. Dinner and overnight at MBSC.

Day Five Maliau Basin — Kota Kinabalu

Breakfast at 0700Hrs and depart for the Observatory Tower for a final photo session. Stopover at Kenungau town for lunch and thereafter continue your drive back to Kota Kinabalu city hotel.
