BEWARE OF DARIO ARGENTO: A 20-Film Retrospective Event
After three difficult years, it is the latest and greatest horror retrospective yet!
Celebrating 30 years of partnership with Film at Lincoln Center (FLC), this collaboration with Cinecittà and the Italian Cultural Center of New York showcases 20 of Dario Argento’s most iconic and influential films and honors the 4K restoration of 17 titles prepared exclusively for this event, running from June 17–29.
Following the explosive success of previous showcase events, the 2018 Luchino Visconti and 2019 Ermanno Olmi retrospectives, Chiara Sbarigia, President of Cinecittà says, “We have decided to come back after these difficult months with Dario Argento, whose retrospective has already been booked by international venues for the next two years.”
The FLC lauds that “The retrospective will pay homage to Argento’s singular voice in horror cinema, from his seminal debut feature The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) and other unforgettable contributions to the subgenre including Deep Red (1975), Tenebrae (1982), and Opera (1987); to his masterful paranormal-tinged Phenomena (1985), and supernatural “Three Mothers Trilogy”: the wildly influential Suspiria (1977), 35mm screenings of Inferno (1980), and Mother of Tears (2007); to underscreened gems like Trauma (1993), The Stendhal Syndrome (1996), The Black Cat (1989), and Dracula 3D (2012), as well as his made-for-television feature Do You Like Hitchcock? (2005).” This festival also boasts the North American premiere of Argento’s first film in 10 years, Dark Glasses, which will undoubtedly be a special treat to fans and newcomers alike.
In addition to much-anticipated screenings, Argento himself will be present during select screenings, adding to the festival’s hype. Additionally, until June 23, the Furman Gallery, located in the Walter Reade Theater, hosts a public exclusive poster exhibit of many Argento titles curated by film poster extraordinaire, Posteritati.
Sponsored by MUBI and organized by Madeline Whittle and Tyler Wilson of Film at Lincoln Center, and by Camilla Cormanni, Paola Ruggiero, and Marco Cicala of Cinecittà. Also promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this retrospective event is part of Fare Cinema 2022, a dedicated Italian festival to celebrate cinema as a profession, and promote the Italian film industry internationally.
Tickets for the retrospective, plot summaries, and more information about the event can be found on the official website.
