My God died when I was just eighteen, and ever since I have suspected every organised religion in a way that an atheist does. I eschew all kinds of religious texts, and never ever visit any holy places- temples, mosques, churches, whatever.
After I abandoned religion, I dealt with Marxism for some time. But its practitioners have failed me in a big way.
What I do feel now is that religion and Marxism have been abused to such an extent that they have lost their relevance and are practically dead. But the irony is that these are still effective tools to hook the masses. Our rulers know it. The vested interests know it. And they use them when necessary — just as a utility tool.
Campbell was right: our civilization has outlived religion. But it has also outlived capitalism and socialism. It is also going to outlive neo-liberalism as well.
So, what are we left with?
Humanity as religion. And new humanitarian approach in our conversations.
I like your vision of the future: it’s so lofty and humanitarian being based as it’s on tolerance — the need of our times.
Thanks, Oliver Shiny, for this riveting think piece.
