I must tell you that I was a bit disappointed with this movie. The Sci-Fi Channel hyped this movie for a month before it aired. The previews looked excellent, yet it was not to be. Certain areas of this movie were interesting and others seemed rather campy. The special effects also seemed to swing wildly on the pendulum between high quality and downright silly.
Based upon a short story and subsequent comic book by Clive Barker, Saint Sinner begins in a secluded monastery in northern California in 1815 and tells the story of a monk, Brother Tomas (Greg Serano), who is forced to travel through time to the 21st century to do battle with two rather nasty succubi Munkar and Nakir (Mary Mara and Rebecca Harrell). Serano does a good job at portraying a confused and troubled monk struggling with his faith all the while attempting to stop the demon rampage.
I guess the primary thing that bugged me was how utterly hideous these succubi were. The mythic definition of succubi is night demons of female persuasion that suck the life force out of men. Folklore and demonology states that succubi, when in the presence of men, were radiant in appearance. Their beauty was the soul-stunning reason why men would be overwhelmingly seduced, the reason why men would willingly become a food source and be consumed. They are supposed to be the most beautiful women we have ever set are horny eyes upon, and yet… in Saint Sinner these two succubi, at all times, look like two crack whores let loose from a backwater Texas saloon.
Clive Barker in a recent interview addressed this situation. When asked about the unhealthy look of Munkar and Nakir he was to say, \’one of my instructions was — don’t make the error of trying to make these women sex goddesses, because they’re not that, they’re monsters.\’ Ok, well I am not sure if that is an error or not, but it’s for damn sure most men would rather puke broken glass than spend a night with one of these creatures, much less get seduced by one.
This movie wasn’t scary and it wasn’t really amusing. In fact the most interesting thing about it was the ivory ball that trapped the two succubi, now that is one cool paperweight.
