Education for Social Justice

Dear Supporter
Following on the success of our Arts & Activism project that was run with our high school students, we are planning a weekend youth camp (end of school term 3, 2017) to educate high school students on contemporary issues concerning social justice and the city.
The aim of the camp will be to equip students with tools for social analysis, and to help them to explore how the problems in their own communities are linked to broader social patterns.
Recognising that the students we work with are in most cases also victims of systemic and structural violence, we are also including an arts component as a means toward reclaiming dignity and understanding how the arts can be used as a tool for creative resistance.
As Bottomup advocates for the use of critical pedagogies, we will be using dialogical-approaches in the manner each camp workshop is conducted, allowing us to critically reflect, together with students, and to explore together how we can practically implement what we learn.
Some of the themes our camp will explore will include:
- Race, Class, Gender & Identity
- Expanded definitions of Violence
- Understanding the economics of inequality in South Africa
- The City, Rapid Urbanisation and Spatial Injustice
- Exploring violence and inequality within our schools.
- Rhythm and Resistance
We are calling on you to be a part of changing South Africa for the better by helping us run this camp!
You can do so today by sponsoring the students who will attend for R800/per student.
The R800 per student will cover costs of transport, accomodation, meals as well as resources that will be compiled for students.
