DIY Raspberry Pi Boot Disk: Pitfalls You Need to Know

First and for most: DO NOT use the official SD formatter to format your SD card. As it will format your SD card to exFAT format, while the NOOBS image you downloaded will need FAT to do the initial boot up.

Use your system disk utility to format the disk to FAT format. On Mac OS, which I’m using, you can do it in Disk Utility to erase the SD card, before erase, select the format to FAT.

Select the SD card in the Disk Utility tool
Click Erase and select “MS-DOS (FAT)” format
Done!

Now you can copy the NOOBS image into the SD card. And use the card to boot up Raspberry PI.

Enjoy!
