Pedernales Falls State Park in Texas
We bought a Texas State Park pass — so we’re doing a small series on the parks we’ve used it at.
Overview
Located an hour west of Austin in Johnson City, on the banks of the Pedernales River, Pedernales Falls State Park offers:
- 69 Campsites as well as primitive (hike-in) sites
- Hiking and biking trails
- Swimming in the river
- Waterfalls
- Texas Junior Ranger program
What We Like
Our first evening at Pedernales Falls provided a meet-up with members of our fulltiming “tribe.” The Hendricks overnighted at the state park and the Norrells drove in from Fredricksburg to visit.
The Twin Falls trail led behind our campsite, so we walked the path a few times. It was very peaceful and the scenic overlook was refreshing. Mike and I also walked a few other trails, enjoying the sounds of the birdsongs, rushing river, and the breeze rustling the trees.
The whole family enjoyed our trips to the falls where we climbed the limestone rocks and explored the cascading falls.
The park’s location made for easy drives for our day trips to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Fredricksburg and Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls.
What We Didn’t Like
Cell Coverage
There was no AT&T coverage on the roads leading back to the park nor in the park. My Verizon phone couldn’t find a signal, either, but we were able to use our Verizon air-card with our external antenna up.
Availability
Like most Texas State Parks, Pedernales Falls is booked during the weekends by locals. Luckily for us, sites were available during the weekdays.
Construction
Not the park’s fault, but the roads leading into the park were under construction. We waited long periods of time waiting for the flagman to turn his sign to “Slow.” However, once the road work is completed, the drive to the park should be easier.
Overall
We were really craving some time in nature, and this park totally satisfied. Exploring the falls was definitely a highlight. We highly recommend this park for some family exploration.
