Did Margarita “Rita” Mamun, a Russian decorated rhythmic gymnast, just kiss goodbye her beloved sport? With the looks of it, it seems like there is a huge chance that she did, although many fans are arguing that there is no official announcement and that they refuse to believe the President of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation’s statement.

Quoted by TASS News Agency, President Irina Viner-Usmanova said in an interview this week that, “I don’t expect Margarita to come back. If she comes back, I’ll be happy and she’ll be welcomed back. If not — I’ll be also happy, because she has a great partner, she’ll live a good life and become a good mother.”

Obviously, Mamun is not in the gym training right now and Viner-Usmanova is not expecting her to train again, although they would be really happy if she did. This is evident as she was not present in the recently concluded 2017 Grand Prix Moscow where the Russians dominated the scene, and where Mamun also proved her talents to the world last year.

If we could recall, in an interview after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Mamun stated that, “I do not want to think about my retirement, but I just love Tokyo. We go there every year for the competition at the Club World Cup called “Aeon Cup.” I think they will hold the Olympic Games at the highest level. I would like to, of course, go there, but we will see. I do not know what I’m going to do.”

If Rita Mamun really did retire, this saddened many fans so, especially since Mamun’s best friend and teammate Yana Kudryavtseva has just retired as well early last month. The Russian rhythmic gymnasts, needless to say, are one of the darlings of the crowd.

Margarita Mamun’s Career

The 21-year-old gymnast has accomplished a lot and has decorated herself with multiple awards that would take days to list down. But a few of them and probably the most important are that she is the 2016 Olympic All-around Champion after giving her own teammate and best friend World Champion Yana Kudryavtseva the silver medal and taking the gold for herself with a total score of 76.483. In the final, out of 20 gymnasts, Mamun was the only gymnast to have scores over 19 points on all four apparatus. In the said Games, she set a new Olympic Record under the 20-point judging system with a total of 76.483 points, surpassing the previous mark score of Evgenia Kanaeva at the 2008 Beiling Olympics.

Rita Mamun is also two-time World All-around silver medalist, 2015 European Games All-around silver medalist, 2016 European Championships All-around silver medalist, three-time Grand Prix Final All-around champion and a three-time Russian National All-around Champion.

Aside from all that titles, she also holds records like having the highest All-around total of 77.150 points under the 20-point judging system which she scored at the 2016 Baku World Cup. Another one of her records is being the first rhythmic gymnast to score above the 77 points mark in the All-around total score, where she broke Kudryavtseva’s previous record of 76.450 points.

In all of her accomplishments, her fiancée, swimmer Alexander Sukhorukov, was all out in his support. Her best friend Kudryavtseva was proud of her even if they are most of the time neck-to-neck during competitions. Even her family and fans support everything that she would do, so it would not be a surprise if Mamun really did retire, as everyone is still proud and thankful of all her amazing work.
