Coping with Bipolar Mood Swings

Bipolar is a mood disorder that is characterized by intense mood swings. Even though bipolar disorder usually starts during adolescence or early adulthood, bipolar in kids is not uncommon. The person might feel euphoria on one end of the spectrum and then might feel depressed when experiencing the other end of the spectrum. The mood swings associated with bipolar disorder can be exceptionally stressful for the individual, and may impact their life in a negative way.

Coping with Bipolar Mood Swings

Be aware of what triggers your mood swings. There might be just one or many triggers for an individual, so it’s important to be aware of all of the possible causes that can trigger a bipolar event. Trigger possibilities include medications, erratic schedule, insufficient sleep, either positive or negative stress, stopping bipolar medication, drugs, alcohol, caffeine, changes in seasons, and thyroid problems.

Get enough sleep. The first step you should be taking to cope with bipolar mood swings is to get enough sleep. Try to get to sleep and wake up at roughly the same time, as the body and mind work more efficiently when on a schedule.
 
Control your stress. If there is something in your life that causes you enormous stress, you must take steps toward either eliminating it or delegating responsibility to other people. Whether it’s your work (maybe find another, less stressful job), or taking care of aging parents (have friends or family chip in), controlling stress will also help minimize the severity of your mood swings.

Meditate. Meditating on a regular basis has enormously positive impacts on the body and the mind. You can practice Yoga, visualization, or any other type of mindful meditation.

Keep a journal. By keeping a journal of your life in a nutshell (what you’ve eaten that day, had to drink, stresses of the day, life changes and events), you’ll be able to spot trends, seek help, and make yourself less vulnerable to shifts in mood.
