In this article, we’ll talk about the idea of “aspect ratio” as it applies to MidJourney AI and how it can affect how your artwork turns out. The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of its width to its height. It is usually written as a fraction, like 4:3 or 3:2. There are, however, a lot of other sizes that are possible to use. It’s important to know that MidJourney helps control aspect ratios during processing. This means that –ar 3:2 is the same as –ar 1920:1280 when the “Peak Upscale” option is chosen. If you choose an aspect ratio that MidJourney doesn’t support, it will automatically choose the next closest one to keep the look of your art the same.

Let’s take a gander at why aspect ratio is important when using MidJourney AI. For example, if you want to make a full-body picture of an elf in Middle Earth, you’ll need a taller aspect ratio than a wider one. If you utilize a wider aspect ratio, the bottom of the elf will be cut off, and you’ll only be able to see the part from the head to the waist. Let’s see how this works with the prompt “Concept art of a beautiful female elf carrying a leather bag and intensely staring into the camera, Middle Earth village in the background, — testp — ar 9:16” with an aspect ratio of 9:16 (taller than wide or portrait):

Example 1 of a mid-trip aspect ratio: 9:16 (Portrait)

Now, let’s use the same prompt with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (wider than tall or landscape):

Example 2 of Mid-Journey Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (Landscape)

As you can see, when you use a wider aspect ratio, the bottom part of the elf is cut off, leaving only the head to waist area.

So, when should you opt for a portrait ratio, and why should you use a landscape ratio? Portrait aspect ratios work best for book cover designs, Pinterest pins, social media posts, photos of people, and close-ups of certain parts of MidJourney art. Landscape aspect ratios, on the other hand, landscape aspect ratios are best for computer wallpapers, YouTube thumbnails and covers, Facebook cover images, nature scenes, and concept art.

Here are nine common MidJourney aspect ratios, all of which start with the same image:

As you’ve seen, the aspect ratio of an image will have a big effect on how your MidJourney artwork turns out in the end. If you know how aspect ratios work and choose the right ratio for your project, you can make beautiful AI art that shows what you had in mind.
