Timelines and Religion
Religious Event/Movement Timeline project — (20%) In conjunction with reading The History of God, the class will produce a series interactive timelines charting the developments and innovations that have influenced the modern practice of the religions of the Middle East, as they are practiced around the world. Each student is required to create one timeline (at least 15 “events”) of a significant person, event, or idea. The timelines must be accompanied by a narrative description of the event.
How religions interact and influence one another is often a difficult concept to fully comprehend. By identifying key characters and events on a timeline, the interconnections and cross developments of religious ideas becomes much more evident.
Requirements:
- One timeline of a significant event, person or idea (use Armstrong as a starting point, but develop beyond that resource)
2. Each timeline must have at least 15 “events” or entries
3. Be able to discuss your event in class
Here’s an example (note this one is longer than yours needs to be)
Procedures for the timeline:
- We will use the very simple system at tl-generator.herokuapp.com
- There is no log-in, you can save your work in a small downloaded file
- Begin adding entries according to the instructions
- www.cs.ubc.ca/group/infovis/software/TimeLineCurator/#about
2. Use pictures to illustrate when possible (give credit where credit is due)
3. Each entry should clearly explain the importance of the event and what happened
4. Be creative, work on something you are interested in, and ask questions if necessary
Important Note: The timeline generator might not work very well with a Safari browser, Chrome is recommended.
