If we do it the way that the author proposes, resident ILE will become “remedial major training” and have a negative association, I would guess that should it be adopted very few people selected to attend resident CGSC would be competitive for LTC/CSL; so reversing course would do little to nothing except make successful officers resent having to complete distance learning while they KD. The heart of the issue is that the first time we identify even the top half of officers is after a decade of service; we should strive to identify leaders early on. 360 assessments are not enough, we also need to do a better job of culling the herd of commanders who are incompetent, toxic, vindictive, or hypocritical. Peer reviews, subordinate reviews very simple: would you want to work with/for this person again? I understand we are in the getting results business, but getting results by running the organization into the ground is not getting results, it’s weeding the garden with a flamethrower.
