In today’s day and age, music has become the past time for people all around the world. Music is a powerful tool that brings people of different races, cultures, sexes, and beliefs together in unison. For Blog number two we will dive down into Logic’s new song ‘1–800–273–8255’ featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid. According to Spotify’s most recent statistics ‘1–800–273–8255’ is ranked number-six song out of the Global top 50. For many who are unsure of the title, it is the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the songs acts as an anthem for suicide prevention. Recent studies from afsp.org speculate that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US and on average there are 121 suicides per day.

Many times people sing songs and don’t even have the slightest clue with what they are singing about. After analyzing the lyrics of the song, a since of security is promoted. It is promoting a heartfelt message assuring listeners that there is always someone there for you. The chorus goes “I don’t wanna be alive/ I don’t wanna be alive/ I just wanna die today/ I just wanna die.” This is the voice of someone calling out that they don’t feel like they have purpose in the world and want to kill themselves. Logic played it risky when releasing this song because suicide is such serious topic that most Americans refrain from talking about. Logic counters that with “I want you to be alive/ You don’t gotta die today.” Suicide is such a serious topic that people blindly look past the severity of it. Logic’s intentions were to give awareness and support to people giving them a since of purpose in life. Sometimes even a simple song just as this one can really change a person’s actions. Popular Culture such as music is a beneficial tool that reaches out to so many people because it constantly surrounds us shaping our values and who we are.
