Borrowed Time

Your eyes gleam off the streetlights.

Your smile beams the same.

We trek across the city,

talking honesty and pain.

You hand me your heart to carry.

It’s fragile, yet vigorous.

I know you’ll ask for it back some day.

I’m just grateful for the trust.

It’s getting late.

We’re tempting fate.

We saw this coming down the line.

It was just the afternoon.

Now the end is coming soon.

I wish we had more time.

I’d prefer to lose you,

than to not have known this love.

You’re my reason for believing

there’s something greater

up above.

The past has passed,

I still hear your laugh

echo in the hallways

of my mind.

I could smile that it happened,

Grasp to memories of us laughing, but

I still wish we had more time.

I’ve begun to realize that

Everything concludes.

Bones turn to dust.

I used to turn to you.

When the lights begin to fade,

And my lungs whisper, “Sleep well.”

I’ll think of that unrivaled smile,

and forget the tears that fell.

Our hearts wouldn’t be so heavy,

If they were not so vast.

We knew deep in our abyss,

That none of this would last.

The hourglass is empty.

Our love starts to unwind.

If I never catch a glimpse of your grin again,

just know I’m forever grateful for your time.
