No monopolies, if one instance ever shuts down, you don’t have to convince your friends to switch to a different social network, you just let them know to follow your new account on a different instance

But you’d have to rebuild your following, right… which would be a freaking nightmare. It would be great if a Mastodon identity could be cryptographically signed so the system would just recreate it on a new instance and verify that it was destroyed on an old instance.
