It starts with a spark

I love a good metaphor. I’ve been thinking about passion, drive and motivation a lot lately. And in my experience it is all about fire.

Fire is alluring. It’s incredibly dangerous, but also life saving. It’s beautiful but also scary.

Finding your drive and your passion is a lot like building a fire.

It all starts with a spark. Many people see others with a lot of passion and drive and wonder how they get there and if they will get there.

A spark doesn’t turn into a raging inferno immediately. You have to fuel your fire, you have to gather kindling — you have to continually maintain and nurture your fire to make it grow. The conditions have to be just right, and sometimes you have to move on to a new spot and start over and over.

But soon that tiny spark transforms into a raging inferno. Now your fire is growing, and exponentially. At this point, there’s not much you can do to stop it, and you trust that it will continue to grow.

We all have our fires — and they all start with a spark. So see where that takes you and don’t let it fade away.
