Native to India, the versatile plant neem has been used for its therapeutic and insecticidal properties for thousands of years. Azadirachtin and other limonoids, which have various mechanisms of action, are the active ingredients in neem that give it its pesticidal properties.

Neem has been shown to have numerous other advantages, including the promotion of plant growth, the suppression of fungal diseases, and the enhancement of soil quality, in addition to its pesticidal properties.

What is the neems good for?

Numerous studies have proven that neem works as a natural pesticide against a wide range of pests, including insects, nematodes, and mites. While being as effective as synthetic pesticides with a reduced environmental impact.

Additionally, neem is safe for humans and non-target organisms.

However, the use of neem as a natural pesticide has certain limitations. Being biodegradable, neem has a limited residual activity, meaning that it quickly breaks down in the environment and may require multiple applications for long-term pest control. Also, neem is less effective against certain pests, such as some species of caterpillars and thrips.

Neem in its Many Forms

Neem oil

Neem oil is a natural pest control product made from the seeds of the neem tree. It can be applied to the leaves of plants to control a wide range of pests, including insects, mites, and nematodes. Most common form

Neem leaf extract

Neem leaf extract can be made by soaking neem leaves in water and then straining the liquid. Can be sprayed onto plants to control pests and diseases.

Neem cake

Neem cake is a byproduct of neem oil production, and is made by crushing neem seeds and pressing them to extract the oil. Neem cake can be used as a natural fertilizer, and has pesticidal properties.

Neem-based pesticides

There are many commercial neem-based pesticides available on the market, which are formulated with neem oil or other neem extract. These pesticides can be applied to plants to control pests in a similar way to neem oil. Be careful, some of these are made with “no so good” inputs.

Neem-infused water

Neem leaves or neem oil can be added to water and allowed to infuse for several hours or days. The resulting neem-infused water can be sprayed onto plants to control pests.

Neem-based pest repellents

Neem oil or other neem extract can be used to make homemade pest repellents, which can be applied to plants or around the garden to deter pests.

Conclusion

Neem is a natural pesticide that works against a wide range of pests. It is a safer alternative to synthetic pesticides because its use is safe for humans and non-target organisms. Neem is still a popular choice for natural pest control despite its limitations, such as being less effective against certain pests and having limited residual activity.

Neem can be purchased in a variety of forms, such as neem oil, neem leaf extract, neem cake, neem-based pesticides, neem-infused water, and neem-based pest repellents. Other forms of neem include Neem remains a useful resource for natural and environmentally friendly pest control in any form.
