It’s Not Wrong to Love Your Job
Conduct a quick search on Google on “finding your passion,” and you’ll quickly see that there is so much advice out there that you should make your passion your job. I think that this creates an ever-increasing mindset that you can’t be passionate about what you are currently doing, and that you need to start pursuing something different. But…what if your passion is “Doing Business?” What if you love business, business planning, marketing, research etc? If you have a passion for those things, what is wrong with finding passion and fulfillment in those things, without feeling like you need to conjure up another passion and/or job?
Of course, if you don’t like the company you work for, you can find another company where you can apply your skills and put your passion to practice. But if you do love the company you work for, and the role you have, why not find deep fulfillment in what you’re currently doing? Why not sharpen your skills to make you even better at what you are currently doing?
I think this misunderstanding is due to not going deep enough in to the guidance of many of the influencers online. For example…Gary Vaynerchuk, who preaches the side hustle and making money by pursuing your passion also states that his passion is doing business, and he loves it! Tim Ferris, author of The Four Hour Workweek, works tirelessly…and the premise of his book is smart automation and delegation in order to squeeze more useful productivity out of your time and day.
For me, my passion is developing new business and markets in the reproductive genetics market. Therefore, I am in a place where I am passionate about what I’m doing, and I love it. I love studying the market and the field I am in.
This mindset has created the spread of an idea that you can’t love your job…that you have to always be working on something else. But I think that’s wrong. You of course can have a side project or passion project…but never neglect what you are currently doing.
There are so many opportunities to apply your passion…don’t forget to look where you are now!
