Truly novel innovation, on the scale of uber, airBNB, or, for that matter, Mosaic, Wordperfect, or Lotus 123, has conferred incredible benefits to the US and global economies. But it is far too difficult in healthcare. We’ve succumbed to the notion that healthcare is somehow too important to subject to the rowdy vicissitudes of markets. But the command-and-control, central planning instincts blanketing the insurance sector since the birth of Medicare, and the hospital sector, since, well, the Hill-Burton Act, stifle experimentation at every turn. The American entrepreneur has the energy, creativity and motivation to transform healthcare like she transformed financial services, manufacturing, logistics and consumer goods. Capital stands by to fund her ideas. The sole barrier to delivering on the promise of increased productivity, quality with lower prices is for policymakers to stand down, deregulate and encourage growth of market activity.
