First Chapter: Aomame Aomame, a young woman and fitness instructor, is caught in a traffic bottleneck on the Tokyo expressway at the start of the story. She takes matters into her own hands after becoming frustrated with the traffic jam and making her way through a secret staircase and emergency escape ladder. Her rash choice sends her down a path that culminates in an enigmatic and unnerving meeting with the Sakigake, a religious cult.
Section 2: Tengo Tengo, a modest and restrained math instructor who also aspires to be a writer, becomes involved in an odd creative endeavor in the meantime. His editor Komatsu approaches him and asks him to rework a fantasy book called “Air Chrysalis” that a teenage girl named Fuka-Eri wrote. Chapter 3: The Parallel World Aomame finds herself suddenly transported to a parallel realm that she names “1Q84,” where odd happenings and minute distinctions are commonplace. She sets out on a mission to kill those she believes to be morally repugnant in order to learn the truth about this parallel realm. Chapter 4: Fuka-Eri Tengo finds himself enthralled with Fuka-Eri, the mysterious writer of “Air Chrysalis.” He discovers disturbing facts about her upbringing and the enigmatic religious cult of which she was formerly a part as he digs deeper into her past and the inspiration behind her book. She starts to doubt the nature of her own reality and the real goal of her mission as she struggles with the ramifications of their presence. Tengo, however, starts to encounter odd occurrences of his own, which forces him to consider the notion that 1Q84 might not be as cut off from reality as he had previously thought.
Chapter 6: Love and Connection A strong and mysterious bond unites Aomame and Tengo as their paths come together. They encounter difficulties and barriers, yet their relationship only gets stronger as time and space pass. They take on the enigmas of 1Q84 together and set off on a quest for atonement and self-discovery.
