Chapter 1:

Emmett Watson, an 18-year-old juvenile offender, is introduced in the first chapter of the book after being freed from a juvenile work farm in Nebraska. In order to locate his long-lost brother Billy, Emmett is adamant about traveling to California. With minimal funds and no means of transportation, he embarks on a foot journey down the Lincoln Highway.

Chapter 2:

Emmett meets Woolly and Duchess, two other tourists who are operating a pilfered vehicle. Woolly is a lovable ex-convict, and Duchess is a stunning young woman with a rough history. As they go west, the three people unexpectedly get close despite their differences.

Chapter 3:

In the meantime, 10-year-old Jimmy and his black World War II veteran father, Ulysses Perry, are making their way from their Pennsylvania home to California. They come against racial prejudice and discrimination along the road, but they don’t waver in their will to create a better future for themselves.

Chapter 4:

Along the route, Emmett, Duchess, and Woolly encounter a variety of strange people and run-ins with the law, among other difficulties and impediments. They persevere in the face of hardship, relying on their wit and resourcefulness to get by.

Chapter 5:

Along the way, Ulysses and Jimmy encounter many challenges as they make their way through a society that is still sharply segregated based on race. They make friends with other travelers along the route who help and encourage them when things get tough.

Chapter 6:

The routes of the two groups of travelers start to overlap as they proceed westward along the Lincoln Highway. They come across a colorful array of personalities along the road who influence their path and teach them the true meaning of family and friendship.

Chapter 7:

Emmett, Duchess, Woolly, Ulysses, and Jimmy have to face the demons of their pasts and make tough choices regarding their futures as they get closer to their objective. Along the way, they learn that friendships and the quest for a brighter tomorrow are more important than financial wealth in defining the true meaning of the American Dream.

Chapter 8:

The passengers arrive in California at their destination in the last chapter, where they are forced to bid farewell and part ways. Notwithstanding the difficulties they have encountered, their trip along the Lincoln Highway has left a lasting impression on them, and they bring memories of the people they have met and the trials they have conquered with them.
