I had lost 60 pounds in 4 months…
by pure chance. I wasn't dieting or particularly large at the time. After much procrastination, I finally visited the doctor. It was June 4th 2001 and I was 21 years old.
We talked about my lifestyle and habits as he was searching for other symptoms. We ran several other tests at the time, none of which I remember now.
Finally, he asked how much I was urinating and something triggered in his brain. The doctor and his nurse returned with a lancet, blood testing strip and a glucose meter. My finger was poked for the first time and a blood glucose test was performed.
I don't know if it was a full minute but it seemed like days and I still remember every second. The number returned was 320.
I've now had Type 1 Diabetes for 13 1/2 years and it all started in that minute.
