To be fair, Beyonce and Jay Z did March during the Ferguson rallies. She also donated money to those arrested during the Baltimore and Ferguson riots. These have been more or less well-reported on. I think it’s a stretch to call her current actions disingenuous or uncharacteristic. I think it’s more likely that as she matures, she’s willing to venture out more into her work and is less afraid to take a stand for what she wants. Obviously Beyonce doesn’t compare to the activist-artist that Janelle Monáe is, but I don’t necessarily think she is obligated to be. Maybe we should take the art for what it is, and give credit where credit is due. Beyonce has shown more support than most, and that’s something to recognize.
