Over the last few weeks, I wrote briefly on an introduction to a key concept of sound recognition and why it is an emerging market. Then something happened….

On September 21st, Amazon made a huge announcement, signaling the ushering of a new era in mainstream sound recognition. Amazon introduced to sound recognition functionality on Alexa Guard, a service focused on reacting to three distinct sounds: smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and breaking glass. The service will be run on ADT (through ADT’s Pulse platform) and Ring Alarm.

This is the moment we’ve been waiting for — the next growth spurt in AI’s understanding of sounds and all things contextual awareness. With the recent news surrounding Amazon, ADT and Ring, what does this imply firsthand?

A slow but steady shift, in home security products…

First, the news itself is huge for home security companies. With ADT as one of the leaders in home security, an influx of home security companies vying for sound recognition implemented on their products will explode in the upcoming years.

This is exciting as home security companies are always looking for innovative ways to maintain high retention rates for customers, and to increase customers’ engagement with their home security products.
