UNITED STATES — U.S. law enforcement officers killed at least 1,181 people in 2022, which is more than any year in the past decade, according to Mapping Police Violence.

Mapping Police Violence is a nonprofit research group which maintains a database of reported deaths at the hands of U.S. law enforcement officers.

According to the nonprofit, there were only 12 days in 2022 in which a person was not killed by U.S. police.

The nonprofit also stated that data shows a racial discrepancy in the number of Black people killed by police.

“Black people were 24% of those killed by police in 2022 despite being only 13% of the population,” Mapping Police Violence states on its website.

The nonprofit also claims that, from 2013 to 2022, police killed Black people at a higher rate than white people in 48 of the largest 50 U.S. cities. Boston, Minneapolis and Chicago were the three cities with the highest racial discrepancy in police killings.

98.1% of killings by U.S. police from 2013 to 2022 did not result in an officer being charged, data shows.

The nonprofit’s methodology in collecting data can be read here.
