I was part of the design team for the 2019 spring recruitment for Alpha Kappa Psi, one of the oldest and the largest co-ed professional business fraternity in the nation. We host fall and spring recruitment every school year, and the design team has a huge role every other quarter in bringing out potential brothers to rush us over other fraternities.
I worked with Noela, Michelle, Jessica, and Megan to develop our designs, and we met weekly to share our individual ideas and consolidate them. We came up with several different modern, sleek themes and variations and omitted the traditional tagline we have each quarter, drawing inspiration from each person’s designs.
I produced four different types of flyers for our spring recruitment, each of which has its own unique style:
- Flyer 1: A dark, minimal chiaroscuro design that fell more on the mysterious side to draw viewers’ attention.
- Flyer 2: A grainy, three-dimensional geometric design that utilized diamonds going upwards to symbolize the journey of our successes.
- Flyer 3: A pinkish, modern design that showcased photos of members of our fraternity to accentuate the inclusiveness of our fraternity.
- Flyer 4: A blue version of flyer 3 that followed a similar suit, but a reduction in elements to reduce the cognitive load.
For the final design, we ended up using my first draft as a framework, combining several other technical elements from many of the other drafts I created as well.
We wanted to keep the idea of line art from the geometric shapes in flyer 1 and also include the repetition of the word outlines as an advertising technique to get our fraternity’s name out there. The 3D aspect of flyer 4 was taken as well, and we came up with the flyers below:
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience working in my first design team ever. It taught me that collaboration can not only spark inspiration within ourselves but also within others. Being able to be in that artistic environment with individuals who share the same goals has really made me love design and what I do.
Thank you for the opportunity, Alpha Kappa Psi!
