I agree with the article’s basic argument that speculative fiction would benefit from introducing the new range of perspectives that would come with greater cultural diversity with regards to its authors. If I had to pick any detail to quibble about, it’s the generalization that Afrofuturism is characteristically optimistic. That would make sense considering that people of African descent have already gone through plenty of hell and would appreciate some optimism. But suppose a writer of African heritage were to go against the grain and write a dystopian story. Would that work be any less Afrofuturist?
