Justin Timberlake, White Musicians, and Black Culture

I’m sorry, but if Justin Timberlake was applauding Jesse Williams’s speech, I don’t see the problem with his original tweet. Sure, most pop music (hell, most modern music genres in general) is ultimately influenced by African-American traditions. But if Timberlake is basically supportive of Williams’s sentiments, he shouldn’t be portrayed as some racist who “profits off” African-American culture while disrespecting its people. There is a real problem of white people absorbing African and Afro-Diasporan culture influences without sympathizing with the people, but Timberlake most probably isn’t guilty of that if he’s endorsing Williams. These activists who claim otherwise shouldn’t be taken any more seriously than the nutty black separatists who think white people are devils who created AIDS or whatever.
