Privilege is I
Creating a future for his family’s future
Witnessing his resolve to quit smoking for his baby girl
Relaxing by the koi pond he built with his boys, or free labor if unsweetened
Listening to stories about his escape to America, alone and young
Endowing his offspring with knowledge, wisdom, and advice, even when not asked
Watching his tennis swing as he disciplines the kids for poor grades
Privilege is I to have a father
Carrying three children in her belly as she runs a hectic restaurant
Pinching the nipple of her eldest son when his lips spew extra shade
Needing to adult at an erupted age as a result of being a victim of war
Picking up her kids from school is a wish she had while serving tables
Setting curfews to ensure her kids’ safety
Nagging about ironing clothes before stepping outside
Privilege is I to have a mother
Crafting the bed for his queen
Tending to her pains as they lay in bed
Protecting her from harm, emotionally and physically
Steaming the wrinkles out in his clothes for perfection
Driving in the late night as to allow her husband to get an extra shut eye
Asserting herself there is no one above him
Privilege is I to have parents who love each other
Cultivating three vociferous children
Loving one another
Staying and growing together
Talking things out
Working together as true partners
Professing their love
Privilege is I to have role models for my future family
Coming to realize not everyone gets this experience
Developing more admiration upon further internal investigation
Recognizing I would not be me without them
Acknowledging others’ needs of a full house
Checking my entitlement before I speak
Using their adoration as my inspiration to help others
Privilege is I to have these two humans as parents
