The way I frame these things in my mind is to have a Mission (the dream), Values (how I will make decisions), and Priorities (stack ranked order of what needs to get done). On top of that, I try not to confuse Outcome goals with Process goals. The Process goals keep you on track and remind you of the larger prize (Outcome goal). Achievement of many Process goals can be fulfilling even in the absence of attaining the Outcome goal.
