Dictionary of AR/VR: Definitions for the various levels of immersion

I really dislike that there is so much vocab democracy. It is because marketing seems to think you can define things however you want to capitalize on trends. This is a short dictionary of AR and VR terms describing the experience.

AR / Augmented Reality: Virtual Objects are inserted in to a view of the real world.

Alternate Reality: AR that overlays on physical objects in the real-world to make them appear as something else. This could be a virtual costume for a real person, or making a plastic sword appear to be a flaming sword.

VR/Virtual Reality: A 3D virtual experience (currently visual) allows you to see an alternate reality that appears “real”

Mixed Reality: Objects in the Virtual world have a real world counter part allowing you to climb steps, pick things up etc.

3D Movie / Cinema: You see things in 3D almost as though you could reach out and touch them, but you can’t turn your head as it is fixed perspective. Linear timeline, no interactivity.

360 Movie / Cinema: You can turn your head see anything you want, possibly even changing the “zoom” by moving closer, but the view is really just a giant sphere that has the world projected on to it. Linear timeline, no interactivity.

Virtual Movie / Cinema: Stereoscopic environment that allows you to walk around see things in 3d, but is still linear timeline, no interactivity.

Virtual Storytelling: VR that allows you to interact with the story line.

Rich VR: VR that achieves Photo Realism.

Holographic: Voxels of Light are projected in to the real world. No Eye-gear required.

Projected Reality: You visit a real place in real time using an immersive technology. (may or may not be 3d)

Simultaneous Projected Reality: Lots of people visit a real place, can interact with each other/see each other, but none are actually at the place.

Surrogate Projected Reality: A bot or other device allows others to see you while you are using projected reality so that you can be included in the real world activity.

FXAR / Full eXperience Alternate Reality: All objects in an environment are replaced with virtual objects and allow full interactivity.

MSAR / Mind Stimulation Alternate Reality: A biological interface allows for an experience that feels real but is only happening in the mind.
